    Default The Leper

It is 1924. A combat veteran of WWI has been summoned to the local hospital to get the results of a skin biopsy. He is diagnosed with leprosy and the life he has come to know is over. A short but powerful drama. Six pages. One exterior shot. Three interior scenes. Two actors. Two extras.

John Severson is a veteran of the First World War. A branded Marine Corps captain who once got lost deep in a French forest and unknowingly led his men into a leper colony. Now, six years later, he is an idealistic schoolteacher in a tough, working-class neighborhood where he vows to educate his every student. But he quickly learns there is one girl the tall, handsome Swede cannot control. The lovely Bernice DuFresne. Halfway through the school year he swears at himself for falling in love with one of his own students. Then the real headaches begin.

The script is from my novel of the same name. THE LEPER. It is my first "short" adaptation. I'm flexible about a nominal sale and fees. As a published author but beginning filmmaker I'm more interested here in collaboration. Critiques. The challenges. Advice. I've had really good feedback on this site. Hoping for more. Script attached.

Very well written. Just be sure to quadruple check that you don't write any shot directions.

You write well. This is a very interesting story. The most intense shots will be capturing the reactions of Mr. Severson when he realizes what he has. That will have to be artistic in order to deliver the right amount of impact, as well as be THE shots that really make the scene.

Is this the whole script you are selling or just a taste? To be blunt, I would not be a buyer, I have too many other things on my plate, and in waiting, already. Also, for clarification, am I understanding correctly that you are interested in both an outwright sale or someone to make it with you?

Steve O ... Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my script.

I would no more tell a director how to shoot the film than I would let a movie director tell me how to write a book. I literally use Robert Townes's screenplay for CHINATOWN as a text book. To read a scene and then look up and see what Polanski did with that scene still amazes me.

This short script is just a taste of my novel THE LEPER. The book is going to be rereleased next year as an eBook and a trade paperback. It would be nice to have a short film to go along with the release. My interest here is collaboration. Someone to make it with. I would still retain movie rights to the book. As I've mentioned on this site before it's been very difficult to find people to collaborate with here in Minnesota. We have no film community to speak of. If you hear of any filmmakers in the Upper Midwest who might be interested, please point them to my script. To date the most interest in my scripts from these filmmaker forums has come out of England. Is that unusual?

I think the interest from England may be because of the time frame of the story. That's just a guess.

That's a shame that there is no film industry local to you. You've got great scenery there that would make for a great back drop.

I live near Cleveland, Ohio and when I got started on my own career and did research into what the resources were around here I was floored to find out just how much there is here, on a daily basis, just in the local market. Some Super Hero Hollywood films, and other Hollywood films have been shot in this area, but the number of filmmakers, sound people, make-up, actors, editors, special effects make-up and CGI creation, and everything else was incredibly surprising. There is someone making a film somewhere practically every day in this area.

I was never expecting there to be so much going on. Because of this it seems like (after looking around YouTube too) that there is someone in most any area making films. That's why I am surprised you are having trouble finding a crew near you, but I guess it is not as widespread as it would seem.

Does your local Craigslist have a fair amount of listings under the Photo - Video category? Look into SERVICES categories like CREW, TALENT, GIGS, and other related terms. Unfortunately you also find a lot of nefarious types in those categories.

Good luck. I think you have something very interesting though.

    Steve
