Question Which Shotgun Mic & Audio Recorder in 2019

    Hello everybody,

I've been searching the whole internet but I guess I still need a bit more insider information or personal opinions, before I buy my new audio setup. Until now I've been renting the audio equipment for every job.

Hopefully other filmmakers can benefit from this thread, too.
There are a lot of options out there and as someone who is not an audio-expert, I find this topic quite difficult.

A lot of information on the internet is from 2015 or older and I was wondering if there are better (or cheaper) options available now.
And to be honest, I'm still confused about the features and cost-benefit ratio of some products.

I need the audio setup for filmmaking purposes only, not for a podcast environment or something like that.

I'll try to make it short:

    What I am looking for

My goal is to have a reliable audio setup, with excellent audio quality and low noise.

    - A reliable shotgun microphone

    - A mobile audio recording device with XLR input (2-3 of those inputs should be future-proof for me I guess), Phantom-Power, a good Pre-Amp

    My budget

I was hoping to stay below $1000, but seeing how much a good audio recorder costs... I don't have a fixed budget right now. It all depends on the cost-benefit ratio and the features. I don't want to buy another mic or audio recorder in 2-3 years again because I cheaped out the first time.

I have an eye on those products:

    Shotgun microphone

    - Sennheiser ME66 with K6 (very low noise)
(ME67 is more directional, but is it worth it?)

    - Rode NTG-3 (because of the sound characteristic of this mic)

    Audio recorder

The audio recorder doesn't have to have a lot of functions. A good pre-amp, good battery life and maybe even a backup function. Maybe I'm missing a vital function, please let me know then :)

    - Sound Devices MixPre-3 (very good pre-amp, but expensive)

    - a ZOOM recorder (additional room noise recording, cheaper than the Sound Device devices)

    The other stuff

I will look for a proper Boom Pole, Dead Cat etc. later on. Let's not include those in the price right now.

The devices above are just my findings, so if you have other suggestions, please let me now :)

I'd love to hear some opinions from working professionals and those who have experience with this kind of audio equipment :)

I'm sure there is a lot more to it and considering that this is my first time investing in own audio equipment for filmmaking, I'd like to avoid some mistakes right from the start.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    All the best from Germany
