I'd like to suggest a more practical way to handle mono tracks in post, regardless of the source. It's always better in my opinion to have the ability to manipulate in post ingesting whatever comes out from a recorder (settings can get messy, forgotten or worse). As long as there is a feed everything should be easy to address in post. if you record a mono track...

pinkstar puter=computer the only reason I can imagine is that the track holds 1 channel (only), or mono. Could you right click the track in timeline, then properties, then general and see if the stream is mono or stereo?

when you right click the track (in the timeline) and channels do you see left or right only or swap? I use vegas 11 for my personal stuff. when I use vegas on any puter the very first thing that I do is to remove the GPU video acceleration. That thing gave me so many problems pretty much all the time. I don't see any improvement rendering or anything else, just...

you need a release from the publisher. But don't let this stop your project (these things happen all the time but they can be easy to solve). Contact or have your producers contact the publisher , submit a general extract of the script (if requested) and negotiate a release. And the plot already sounds interesting. well done.

I guess that it's a matter of personal preferences but I completely disagree with ironpony. I personally rent the 440 or 600 when available , with a blimp (with an internal shockmount) and a dead cat. I prefer the rode blimp to the sennheiser but that's not the point in this topic here. The sound of dialogs comes out basically post-ready. Meaning that the track...

I agree with dakiller: the gain should be the same as the dialog. so basically it's a pretty easy procedure. The only thing is to find the tones in post. As a system I usually record the first minute or 2 for room tone after setting the caps. Do it as a regular and mandatory step and you'll always know where the tones are (at the beginning). when the dialog is...

the question was about the rentals and the insurance required: they can provide their own (often with the deductibles to be personally guaranteed by the producer(s)) or you provide yours with them as beneficiary. One thing to be careful is NOT to have both ; one or the other. The thing is that I can't find the cost difference: they are vague to say the least....

producers need a broker for insurance and that can be a good thing all considered . There is not much of a "real" competition within insurance providers (if any - the prices do seem to level in a sort of oligopoly manner) but a few brokers out there can make a difference. Some of them keep a log for others to check (the oligopoly temptation runs strong in there...
