Contact your local acting agencies. Agencies will be your best choice because of the actor's experience, readily available contracts, and industry standards. Minors can not work the same 12-hour days as adults on film sets and if they're SAG you'll need to hire a studio teacher during production. Furthermore, specific states have specific labor laws in...

My friend just shot a feature on the XT2 and it looks greeeaaat. The XT3 has the ability to do 10-bit internal recording, which significantly increases the image quality and malleability in post-production. Plus, it can act as a beautiful stills camera. S35 sensor size is nice too plus it's a mirrorless camera, so the focal flange distance allows for a...

It's difficult to match photography lenses, like the ones you've mentioned. On higher end productions, a DP would do a camera test on a certain set of lenses the rental house provides and determine which ones match the most in terms of color, contrast, sharpness, etc. They then take those lenses out for that specific production. Obviously in your case, that...

Even if you hire your actors in Indonesia, you'll still want to fly some of your key department heads from your local country. You'll have a hard time finding a quality DP, PD, AD, etc in that country because it doesn't have a film industry like Canada. When you do find one, he/she will be experienced enough to charge you a Canadian rate. At that point, you're...

You've got a very valid opinion, this would be a terrible run/gun camera, but I wouldn't be too quick to discount the affordability of a fully kitted out BM Pocket for independent cinema. There are accessories added on for the camera can move from camera body to camera body like a decent 5"-7" monitor, magic arm, batteries, tripod, cables, etc. All in, one...

Run the numbers for your hometown. You'd be surprised how cheap locations can be in non-big cities or even big cities in general. You'll just have to really reach out to your contacts at home.

I wouldn't be too concerned with power for the new BMPCC4K. 35-40 minute life is pretty decent and utilizing more traditional power sources like Anton Bauer Dionics is easy with the D-Tap cable Black Magic sells. My only problem is that controlling the camera is through the touch screen only which makes it difficult to change settings, format cards, etc.

I think you should take a look at how El Mariachi was made. Rodriquez embraced the landscape of the city he was shooting in and shaped his story around what the country and city offered rather than forcing the city/country to being something it's not.

You should approach a documentary the same way you approach a narrative film: there's a general direction, style, and mood to the film. That being said, color pallet plays a huge role into how a scene can be shot. I shot a documentary for the band Company of Thieves earlier this year and I used a warm color pallet for majority of the film to give a sense of...

So far, I've heard great things about the new Black Magic Pocket 4k. If you're serious about filmmaking at a budget, then this camera is the one to get. I shot a feature on the GH5 earlier this year and loved the camera, so I highly recommend that camera too. However, the specs and images coming out of the Black Magic Pocket 4k are blowing every other camera...

A lot of production companies in Los Angeles that produce low budget horror films have been shooting their films abroad in countries like Thailand to save money. They typically fly out and house their main cast and crew while hiring locals for lower level crew positions. In my experience, the method is kind of a wash. Shooting outside of major Canadian or US...

I'd say you should always contact your original DP for pick-ups or re-shoots. They can keep the look consistent, regardless of the camera. However, if there's bad blood between you and the original DP, then it may be better for you as the filmmaker to get a different DP. As the filmmaker, you should always pick the DP you want to work with. It is fair to get...

It is your job as the producer to provide insurance when asked by a cast or crew member. However, it's generally assumed production has insurance when the crew/cast is hired. The liability for the production is still ultimately on the producer, so having insurance protects you. If a cast or crew member gets injured, rental equipment is damaged, or location is...

Hi everyone! I'm AJ Young, a freelance DP living in Los Angeles. I wanted to join this forum to meet new and fellow filmmakers, to share and learn the art of cinematography, and to be active in the indie film community. I can't share a link to my website, but I'm easy to find on google and IMDB. :) In the mean time, I would love to get involved in some...
