Default Is it normal to get call sheets a day in advance only, all the time?

Whenever I am helping out on shooting a movie, the filmmakers, whether it would be the PC, PM, or AD, will always send out the call sheet only one day in advance, which makes it kind of frustrating to know what the schedule is ahead of time, to prepare. Is it normal to always send it out only a day in advance, compared to say... a week or more?

Or is this completely normal practice in the film industry?

The day before is normal. Two or three days in advance is awesome, but is more likely to result in a schedule change. I've never seen one further in advance than that.

Oh okay, I definitely understand schedule changes, it's just I feel that I would rather be notified ahead of time, even if a schedule may change later. No need to wait till the last day, I figure. I mean when I shot my short films, I would let people know two weeks in advance, of the locations were books and everything was all set. If something were to change I would let them know later but I didn't think it was worth waiting till the last day, just because a change might happen.

It is standard to tell the crew what days you plan to shoot, and to tell the cast which days they will be needed in advance, even though it might change. But the actual call sheet - with the time to report - is very rarely done in advance. If you can, that's nice. But industry standard is not likely to change, especially given the required turn-around time between when shooting ends one day and can start the next.

I was once told “the first thing to go in a fastidiously planned film, is the plan”.... call sheets can often reflect the last minute changes that so often happen and are VERY rarely more than a day out. Sometimes, Dept. heads will have shooting schedules and working scripts based on that department and are warned in advance of possible changes in schedule based on location , actor, weather availability, etc ..... But call sheets are more often than not handed out after the martini...

Oh okay, I just thought they would send one out earlier that was subject to change, but I guess too many changes happen for that to be semi-reliable :)
