Question Go to Film School or not?

So I'm in my begin 30's and I've been thinking seriously about a career change (to follow my passion in storytelling). I've been working as a game designer for the last 5 years and even though I can't complain having this for what others can call a "dream job". My dream job has always involved film making. I have an educational background in media studies focus on film and television studies, back in college I already to study film history, make some a short film and a music video. Later I somehow got talked into pursueing a career in games (I love games too, don't get me wrong). But lately, a little voice in head keeps wanting to do greater things, tell bigger stories that matter.

Now my plan is, I want to take a break or just basically leave the gaming industry and at least have my last attempt in film making. In the very little free time that I have I try to make short video's. But my plan is to resign my job, move to New York City and attend a program (reckless? I know). I've been thinking about going to NFYA and do a conservatory film making program (1-2 years). It's costs a big randsom of money, I know. But I hope to get really emerge myself into the film making world, make some connections (new friendships with other people who want to enter the film business). Why New York? Because of broadway, fashion industry and many other art forms and artist that the city attracts. I'm an indie film lover, I like to experiment and love artsy things.

I hope to hear other people's thoughts about this. Because I've heard very mixed stories about going to film school and also going to a for-profit academy such as NYFA. If I'm going to study there, I tend to be serious about the program (since it's not a cheap program) and I'm not really in for partying anymore. So I'm afraid I'll be put together with less serious working people who just want to make it into Hollywood but not really in for hard work but more the party life style.

(side note: I'm from Europe and I can't just go to New York to make films on my own. So the idea was doing a study program would be a start)

Let me know what you think, thank you!

(if anyone here went to NYFA, please let me know what you think of that school, thanks)

    First, welcome to Filmmaker Forum!

Second, I think I'd go for a middle ground: consider doing a one semester program to beef up your filmmaking knowledge and to make some contacts in NY. I don't think a full degree program is worth the money, plus contacts in NY are only going to be of limited usefulness when you return to Europe.
This will also make it easier (financially) to travel to film festivals with your work, which I find to be a better way to network.

Thanks a lot for your advice, Mara. I think it might indeed be a better option to just do a shorter course or workshop than do a whole one or two year's program. Investing in making films and trying to enter film festivals might be a better bet in connecting with people in the field or even learn new things.
