Default Would this be considered going over the director's head?

A producer/director I know wanted to make his first feature film and get funding for it. In order to apply for funding, he had to have the cast and crew all ready and signed on, to show what he had to make it with. He was rejected the funding, but someone else was willing to fund him to make the movie, on certain conditions though.

One of the conditions being that the funder gets to pick the cast and crew all himself. The funder has a lot of connections though, so that won't be a problem for him.

So now I cannot work on it anymore. However, I was told by some friends that I should just apply to the funder for any a job on the movie anyway, and not go through the director who wanted me to work on it originally. Just go straight to the funder and apply, hoping he will take me on, instead of picking one of his own people, once he sees a demo reel and all.

But would this look bad of me, if I applied to work on a feature film, if the only way I knew it was being made was through a director who wanted me originally, that I didn't go through while re-applying?

I could just email the company that the funder owns, and saying I hear they are directing a feature and would like to be a part of it, etc, but I would be trying to sell myself to someone who didn't even ask me to

    But would that look bad?

Apply to the funder, if that's who's hiring the cast & crew.

If you know the director personally, I'd send him a quick email that congratulates him on the funding. You can mention that you're submitting to the funder for a crew position, and hope to have the chance to work with him. Either way, you wish him all the best.

Keep it positive, but mention that you're doing it, so he won't think you're going over or around him.

Oh okay thanks, I thought if I mention that I was doing it, that he may try to say to the funder "the editor you said you didn't want, and that you want your own crew... he is going to apply for the job anyway".

As if it may look like I am trying to go around the director if he says that. But maybe it won't.

Why would he say that? That simply makes no sense - the funder simply wants to make his own choices. Make he'll take you. Maybe he won't. You won't know unless you submit. Don't over think this.

K sure, I just feel weird about it since the funder didn't put out a crew call, so I'm applying to a company about a position that wasn't even advertised, so just feel weird about it I guess.
