I keep being told that I should go get on sets and learn how to make movies, so I thought maybe I could apply for jobs as a production sound mixer or boom operator.

But other people in the business say not to do that, cause when you into the union to train for that, they are going to expect you invest in that as a career, instead of just using it learn to become a director, and it's a waste of investment unless I actually want be a career production sound mixer.

So what do you think? Is it a waste of money to invest in that if I want to work my way up to director?
