Default Where can I find a really good cinematographer?

For my past short films, I am told that the cinematography sucks and I really feel like I need to do better. However, I am not sure where to find a good cinematographer. I was told by one person in the business that I should hire a DP from the DGC (Director's Guild of Canada), and even though they charge a lot more money for a short film, I am guaranteed to get much, much better results.

But what do you think, is DGC the way to go and it's worth the money? But on the bottom side, a DGC DP might think that they have better projects to take on rather than mine. What do you think?

I wouldn't go as far as the DGC - nothing against them, but I think the pricing will be too high to make sense for what you need.

On my first feature (Surviving Family, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1991191/reference, I posted on Mandy.com and got an insane number of responses. Many of them were from outstanding DP's, and I got a terrific one.

For the second, (Detours, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3625136/reference), I went with recommendations from other filmmakers because I had developed more contacts. FYI my needs were different this time - a focus on speed as we were shooting a road movie - which is why I didn't use the same guy.

So I would suggest starting with people who have DP'd on projects that you admire that were shot in or around your area, and recommendations from people whose movies you've worked on. And I believe Mandy.com is still an active site for hiring crew, so check that out.

Okay thanks. I tried Mandy before, but I would probably have to either fly someone in and have them stay at a hotel or have them drive cause the nearest ones are a few hours away at least. I haven't looked over their work yet but will.

As for DPs on projects directed by other people that I have worked on, I didn't really think the cinematography was as good as needed possibly, not to sound too harsh on them... But I think I could use someone better than any of my contacts know perhaps. Their is one better one than usual but he is retired now, and not sure if he will come out of retirement for me. He too is from another city. If he doesn't, then I would have to rely on another method, like Mandy or something I guess.
