    Question CINEMATOGRAPHY!!!!

    Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me if nowadays film projects can have a Directing team, can it be the same with DoP's as well? Like can there be a team cinematographers working on the same movie? Appreciate any knowledge about this.

    Many Thanks,

    M

    Welcome to Filmmaker Forum!

The short answer is, I don't know. It's still pretty rare to have more than one director on a movie, although it certainly does happen. Cinematography seems like it would be even harder to have done by a team, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.

I think if you can achieve your vision (or the directors) with two DP's, theres nothing wrong with that. I definitely have seen directing teams, but it's not very common. I'd imagine that although it seems like it would be efficient, any competing opinions about how a scene should look would probably just eat up time and patience which is kryptonite to a production. Most films generally have a consistent lighting theme throughout, I think that would be the rub if you had say 3 DP's all jockeying for their vision and that could wind up messy haha. I like the idea though...two heads are always better than one~

Appreciate the honest feedback mara & CJM Sandman.

Do you agree then, that at the end of the day is all about the script written beforehand & carefully discussed at pre-production that can make a bit of a straight forward statement on how it can be done? Or there will always be the risk of one of them (Directors or DoP's) trying to outshine the other disregarding ethics all together?

As a screenwriter first (producer second), I ALWAYS say it's all about the script :)

But yes, there's certainly a chance that, despite any and all agreements in advance, one can try to outshine and/or step on the toes of another. If you want to go down the road of multiple directors or DP's, I think you need to know them all well enough to be sure that they'll deliver what was agreed.

Thanks mara. I'll look into it.

Btw, just checked your website and it got my attention. Maybe we'll talk about a possible collaboration in the future.
