Default Doc filmmaker on budget looking to upgrade gear. NEED SUGGESTIONS

I知 a documentary filmmaker looking to upgrade my gear (Nikon D7100 that I bought several years ago) and I知 on a tight budget. I can probably spend between $1,000-$1,800 on a body and the rest ($800-$1,000) on lens.

    4K is a must.

My upcoming film should start filming this summer in Mississippi. I'll be walking around with the subject a lot, doing some wide-angle shots, and general interview shots.

So I'm looking for something that:

    1. Is good about NOT overheating
    2. Decent battery life
    3. Has a mic input so I can listen on my headphones

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

The Panasonic GH5 sounds like the perfect camera for your style of filming.

Do you have any recommendations for lenses?

As far as Best quality definitely the new BMPCC4k, secondary the GH5, but you need a real good reason to go with gh5 over bmpcc4k

I like the new BMPCC4K because of the price alone at $1,295, but it doesn't release until September, and I need to start filming in June or July.

Also, do you think the GH5 or BMPCC4k will age better?

This upgrade I want something I can use for the next two years or so.

Considering the current BMPCC is Still better than the GH5 in terms of image quality... and the BMPCC4k has WAY more usuable features like mini xlr than both combined... the new BMPCC4k will be better than anything in the price range for another 5 years. Unless blackmagic releases a new cam or something.

Do you think it's worth waiting until September? Or should I just go ahead and buy the GH5?

That depends, if you actually are good with the BMPCC4k, its gonna out do the GH5 b 3x image quality... so I wouldnt take a GH5 over a bmpcc4k unless I was paid enough to buy a bmpcc4k..

More importantly you should be focusing on how to build a business through marketing/networking/cold calling. If you learn how to build a business and drive sales you will not have to worry about camera cost for very long.

I have a day job, so that doesn't necessarily apply to me.

I'm gunna have to dissagree with tggivens. I'm planning to buy a new camera in the next few months and I've done extensive research (and decided on the GH5 for myself,) and I think there are many reasons to take the GH5 over either BMPCC.

The GH5 is not a camera for everyone. If you were after a more traditionally cinematic look (mainly depth of field) with good low light, I'd recommend the Sony A7sii. But, for someone who's shooting "walking around," the inner body stabilization of the GH5 is practically unmatched on the market right now, especially when paired with a native lens. Neither model of the BMPCC has IBIS.

The thing that I like best from what I've seen about the GH5 is its reliability, whereas many cameras of this price point have problems like overheating and other issues. (Sony cameras being the biggest issue.) I don't personally know BMPCC users and haven't seen enough reviews to know about its reliability, but that camera may be fine in that regard.

For your third point, just google BMPCC battery life. It appears to be atrocious.

Image quality is about comparable between the two, depending on the user and lenses, so I'd really be interested where tggivens saw footage he found so much superior in the BMPCC.

If price is a factor, then the BMPCC probably wins. Also, nobody knows what the BMPCC 4k footage will look like because its not out yet, but it is possible that it will be considerably better. Given the options on the market today, though, I think the GH5 makes the most sense given your description of shooting style.

    Thank you for responding.

I've been reading about the GH5 and it seems like a great camera, I just want something that will be practical for what I need for the subsequent two-four years from now, then upgrade again (or maybe not).

There are a lot of unanswered questions about the BMPCC4K, but the price is great, however will it really be released in September and not December or even early 2019? I think the previous BM camera took 10 months to come out after it was supposed to be 'released.'

The subject for my next film is rather old, so the sooner the better if I can film him, and waiting until September is just too long from now.

No problem, glad I could help! Also apologies for calling JackMiller7 by your name, I was tired last night and mixed up who was who.

But yes, I think the GH5 should have good video quality for the next few years. No camera can be future proof, but if you look at the cameras from the last 4 years that were towards the top of the line then, they still look good today, and the GH5 has comparable video quality to the top of the line cameras today.

    I think I've settled on the GH5.

Can anyone recommend good lenses for this camera?

    Also, good Lavs?

What would your budget be on a lens? And what focal ranges do you need?

Sorry, don't know a ton about lavs so can't help you there.

    Hi tggivens,

Have you looked at Blackmagic's new 4k pocket cam? It fits in your budget. I used it at NAB this year and found it to be an excellent camera. It uses a MFT mount for lenses and you there are adapters if you already own Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica and Panavision lenses. Or if you own any third party lenses for these mounts, you can use them as well.

here si the link for that cam.

Let me know what you think
