Default Director made a feature for $320. How did he do that?

I finished acting in a feature film and the director told me, he made the entire thing for only that much money in US dollars that is, and not counting distribution.

But I was so blown away by that, and wondered how do you make a feature for that cheap, especially since I tend to go over budget sometimes, when things go wrong on my shoots.

I was wondering, does anyone have any advice on how to shoot a movie for that cheap or what I would have to do to cut those kinds of corners?

Honestly, it isn't to difficult. Just use your friends as Crew Members... For Talent - Post a Volunteer Only Casting Call on sites like Backstage. For equipment, use stuff you already have, for locations, ask to use them for free, offer product placement and other advertising.

Mainly just ask for things - the worse answer you can get is a no.

Okay thanks. Well I can't use my friends as crew members since they do not know how to run such equipment and would have to use people experienced in those areas I think, but people in those areas want to be paid it seems. Like for example, none of my friends have any experience in lighting, but the people I know who do, may want to be paid.

    Assumptions.
    Eventhough it might be true.
And if they want to get paid: your project isn't interesting enough to do for free or they just can't afford working for free.

But yeah: a feature can be made for so little if you don't have to pay for anything. That is simple math.
You want to hear a magic spell to hypnotise people to work for free on your projects, but that spell does not exist.
If people like you, like the project and believe it is fun and worth the effort they might want to work for free. Friends is indeed a key word here.

Okay thanks. I was going by my experience, more than assumptions. I'm just really surprised you can make a feature for that low. I will try to find more people wanting to work with me for free.

I'm surprised as well. Makes me wonder whether it is any good or not.

How do you intend to find those people?
