  • Homeless Hero | Prologue

Hello everyone! A friend and I created this little project a while back on a piece of scrap paper, and today we filmed and I took it back and edited it, then managed to upload it all in one day!
This is (for lack of a better name) 'Homeless Hero', the first in what I hope to be a fun long-running series of short episodes. I'd like your thoughts on mainly the shots, as this was a very quickly made short project to gauge interest, and so I realise there are problems with:

    - Stabilisation: I can't afford one of those stabilising rigs yet, so it's a bit shaky
    - Focus: That was all my fault. It was my first attempt at run 'n' gun focus pulling and it didn't work on several occasions
    - Sound: I did buy a shotgun mic but my DIY boom pole broke before the shoot, so it's all on the NEX-7 on-board mic, plus a few of my friends not on camera decided the best time to speak was when shooting, which I didn't notice at the time and had to fix in post

So yeah, I'd like criticism on the shot structure and anything else you spot, does the story overall make sense? Be as harsh as you like!

Anyway, enough of my ramble, enjoy!

I am busy now, but will try to take a look at it soon. And about audio, I just purchased a Zoom H1 and that thing is going to save my audio! It is amazing.

Thanks! There will be more on the way either next month or after August, as I'm out on an expedition for a month.

Nice! Well made, and great idea. I just have 2 comments. One, you should try some color correction. It would give it more of a cinematic look. Next, work on the editing, and also the coverage, making sure you have all of the shots you need. There were a few errors in continuity, where he would be doing something and all of the sudden he is doing something else. On a good note, the story was fine, and more would be awesome! The music selections were nice, but maybe you could try to continue music throughout the whole short. Nice job!

Thanks. I did add some subtle colour grading but then realised after it was practically unnoticeable so I'll work on that in the next one. I did have a storyboard for coverage but in the end I didn't have time to refer to it as often as needed which left me with those gaps. Thanks for the feedback.

                  Great!
I should also note that today I finalised the structure for this season. Along with the current episode, there will be 4 more 5 minute ones, with one coming Monday, and a sixth episode to act as a finale which will run between 15 and 20 minutes.

                  Thanks for the support!

How did you get the paper to rotate and move in the beginning, I am trying to create a title sequence for my film with playing cards like Casino Royal intros, what program etc.../?

I just used motion keyframes in Premiere, but the same method would probably be a bit difficult for anything too complicated. Not sure of any other programs for that, your video editor might do something similar, or Flash?

I think the overall idea has allot of potential! As for the stabilization of the camera, I would suggest using a tripod. Those opening shots would have worked awesomely on a 'pod. I look forward to seeing what you do with this!

In case you didn't already notice the new episode has been a bit delayed. Staying up late tonight to finish it, definitely not for E3. Audio issues due to wind have affected bits of the video, and I'm spending some time on grading and better use of music. Thanks for your support/patience!
