I don't know of any free FX software out there. Download the 30 day free trial of After Effects CS6 :)

Yep. Get the trial. But be sure you get the version for Mac.

I promise you after you do the trial you will want to buy it. Look for a copy on ebay or something. Its worth the money.

Yeah hit up Video Copilot.net and look at their tutorials on there. Or on youtube and search for whatever FX you are looking to learn :)

Agreed. Videocopilot is THE place to go if you want the best tutorials. Be sure to do their basic training first though.

And don't get aggravated with it. Its a complex software. But it is so good.

Yeah for sure. Take what you learn from there and apply it to whatever footage you are working on. Make it different. I see quite a few fx clips out there that pretty much mimic the content thats on video copilot and then slap the whole "this is my demo reel" on it. Use the tools you will learn and make something intriguing :)

I just posted this in another thread recently, but since it's so relevant to this question, I'll post it here, too. Adobe has made their version 2 creative suite available for free, including After Effects 7.0. I don't think free visual effects software gets any better than that!

Note that I'm not sure how well this old software runs on recent versions of the Mac OS, but the Windows versions run fine up to Windows 7, and since it's free, might as well give it a shot.

Wow, I can't believe no one here has told you about Blender. Go to blender.org - Home
This is a free, open source effects and compositing software that works on Mac, or PC. This software does the same thing as Maya, or 3D Max.

The cool thing about Blender, other than the fact that it's free, is that there are many tutorials on youtube that can teach you how to use it. Also, on the Blender site are groups that meet up to teach each other and help you learn.

However, depending on what you want to achieve, you may still need software like After Effects, which is not free.

                          Have fun!

Blender is pretty good. Personally, I find it more confusing than AE, but at least it's free!
