    Filmmaking positions

    Heya Nick,
Any chance you can continue your posts about film maker positions? It's such a great resource! I'm looking forward to learning more about these. For instance, what exactly does a "Grip" do? :)

    Thanks!!

I was a grip on a number of TV commercial sets in New York in the 80's. Mostly it was helping the DP set up lights, clip gels into place, move light stands into place, etc.

They also push or pull the camera dollies.

I think the name grip comes from "gripping" a light stand and moving it. Though that may be a legend.

On a big-budget Hollywood film there may be more or fewer duties based on union rules. The best boy, I think is the head grip--though that may be the key grip.
