  • What do you call a person who plays the music for a movie, as oppose to a composer?

Like when giving credit in a movie, the composer writes the music, but what do you call the person who plays it? Other movies credit the orchestra, but what if it's all done on a computer synthesizer program by one person? What is that job title in the credits?

I've simply encompassed that under "music by."

The composer is the composer. Most film credits will display Music By, Music composed/conducted by, or even the full bill; Music composed, conducted, and orchestrated by (I think Howard Shore got that treatment for LOTR).

Usually the performance credit read "Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra" or "Music by the London Symphony Orchestra"

If you yourself composed AND performed the music, bill it as such. If you had someone else perform, just split the credits, Music By So & so, and Performed by So & so.

I compose frequently, and also perform my own cues. I usually just get Music by, it's simple and if anyone ever asks, you can simply explain you did the entire thing yourself haha~

Oh okay, thanks I can split it then if that is best. I was thinking of doing it myself for future projects, cause I feel that I can play music, but I can't write it lol.

However, most composers prefer to do both it seems, so not sure I will end up performing compositions for movies, but thanks!
