  • Understanding VOD Distribution

    VOD Distribution by DiGi Distribution
So what is VOD Distribution and how can it help indie filmmakers? Here are some definitions on the top VOD networks to this day and examples of which to choose for your indie film and why. Please take a look at some of these platforms for VOD Distribution and keep in mind the percentage that each company will keep before you receive a check, and remember that you do need a aggregator for most of these channels. So here is the information straight and to the point! Ready... GO!

    iTunes

iTunes is a platform that is worldwide known. iTunes offers the content owners a 70/30 split in the profits from the sales. iTunes does not allowing anyone to submit, you must submit via an aggregator with companies such as Distribber or DiGi Distribution - iTunes has gained headway just over Cable VOD since the release of the Apple TV - Many people across the world are canceling there Cable services and no longer watch TV but are using and spending their money on content via iTunes.

    Amazon

Amazon is a platform to allow anyone with a film to offer it up for sale or rent. Amazon offers a 50/50 split via their sister company Create Space - A big misconception about Amazon is many people do not know that anyone can get their film up for sale or rent via Create Space. Amazon has recently been added to the XBOX 360 app section and this will open up a bigger market for sales and has lots of potential for indie films.

    Netflix

Netflix is a DVD and streaming service for films. Netflix offers a license deal and does not provide royalties to the content owners. Recently Netflix has changed the way they accept and acquire feature films, Netflix has publicly stated that it will be difficult for lower quality films to be accepted onto Netflix, though they did state that if enough people will add your film to their queue then it will have a greater chance of getting accepted. Netflix is now focusing on Large studio films and TV shows as well as films that have done well at major film festivals such as Sundance Film Festival.

    Hulu

Hulu.com is a website that offers clips, films, shorts, and lots more. Hulu offers the content owners a 50/50 split from the ad revenue that occur over the video. Hulu has worked very hard to make sure that ads on the hulu videos are seen and can even be seen by users who have a plugin called AdBlockPlus that blocks ads from websites. While this is great for the content owners, it has turned off many viewers from watching on Hulu, but the number is so small compared to the average page videos Hulu receives. Video views are kept private from content owners and aggregators, you will receive a payment with limited information. Hulu only accepts content from approved aggregators.

    CineVolt

CineVolt is a platform that is accessible worldwide. CineVolt offers the content owners 100% of the profits from sales. CineVolt allowing anyone to submit, allows for quick delivery to the movies fan base, tracking of live sales, tracking of live user engagement.

    CABLE VOD

Cable VOD consists of many different networks that offer cable services: Normally Cable VOD offers a 50/50 split from vod purchases. Cable VOD (If accepted) can be one of the most profitable platforms for indie filmmakers.

    Quick Tip:

Video On Demand can do great things for indie films. The traditional way of thinking was "VOD will be last on the list" - But keep in mind that many indie films have received amazing studio deals only after they were released on video on demand platforms. If your film shows it can make a profit it really helps larger studios filter through the thought process of acquiring your film. Keep that in mind! Don't miss the boat by waiting for the golden deal, because chances are it ain't gonna happen... Kevin Smith

There are a few aggregate, some that charge and take a percentage, some that charge and take no percentage, some that do not charge. If you will be going with the upfront fee - For iTunes you are looking at a minimum of $1,000 - Cable VOD minimum $7,000
