A "show runner" is usually the person in charge of running a sitcom or drama show...usually the show's creator. But for a talk show, it's most likely not the host....probably a producer in charge of production.

Never heard of a show runner head....could be the same job position, just phrased differently....?

When I am invited to talk about my new books on radio talk shows, I am introduced to the runner in advance of the interview who explains to me the protocols for any segment when the talent is asking questions, when i can give long responses, what i do with call-ins who are insane and abusive, when we break for commercials, when to mute my microphone, etc. Between the runner and the talent, they have to agree how much time is allotted by contract for commercial breaks and when to break. They also manage the call in screening to try and eliminate the crazies.
