View Full Version : Nikon D5100 Sound

I've recently bought a Nikon D5100 for filmmaking and was wondering what the best microphone would be for it? Ideally I'd like to monitor the sound but unfortunately with the D5100 there's no option to do this. I'm looking for high quality but I am a student so I'm on a budget.

I would get this:

Zoom H4N Portable Digital Recorder | Musician's Friend (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/zoom-h4n-portable-digital-recorder)

We use that on our shoots and it the sound is good. Its got built in mics and you can add external mics as well.

I use a Me 66 Sennheiser connected to a H4n Zoom recorder and get good results. Or you could connect the H4N to a make-shift boom and use it as it has direction microphone.

You could. On the back of the recorder theres a screw mount like on camera's. You can rig up something and mount it on a boom.

Thanks, I'll look into it. Is this suitable for capturing dialogue too?

Yep. I'm thinking of getting one for myself. I've been borrowing my friends H4N and I'm diggin it. I used it to record a tutorial that I posted on here. Check it out in the tutorials section. Only bad thing was the fan on my computer is kind of a beast and it was vibrating the table that I had the mic sitting on so you can hear a little bit humming but that was my fault. Not the mic. But we use it for our shoots and it works perfectly :)
