Question Advice needed for budget issue- am I being taken advantage of?

    Hello,

I need some advice! I am a writer/director getting my first feature off the ground. About six months back I hired a line producer (for a one-off job) to create a budget for me for an agreed cost, and that was that. Things took a little while to kick off, and currently I am starting to collaborate with other producers to begin the financing process. Being a little naive and inexperienced with working with budgets etc, I suddenly realised I had only been sent a PDF of the budget from the LP, and couldn't work into his figures.

I contacted him and asked if he could send me a workable/open document and he refused. He said he 'wouldn't normally release the original file as its full of formulas and calculations which I've built up over a period of time' and that 'normally there would be a line drawn between either the provision of a budget like the one I created for financing means, and a working budget which is an ongoing, developing document'.

He told me he would only send it if I payed an additional fee, and that 'this extra deliverable would have cost you a lot extra at the time', and most surprisingly, that 'it would be very difficult for you to obtain an openly editable budget document of the type I've created for you from any reputable producer or line producer'. I must admit I am very confused. This doesn't sound right at all- what am I supposed to do with a budget set in stone, created before I've even raised any funds? Surely a budget should always be workable, and either I am very much misunderstanding something, or he is outright taking advance of my lack of experience. Could anyone kindly offer their advice of this situation? I would appreciate any insight.

    Many thanks

You can download free Excel budget spreadsheets and plug in the numbers you have in the PDF, and then change them accordingly as things are figured out and realized.

He sounds like he has a god complex and loves the worshipping at his feet.
