Default Has anyone made fake money for a movie before?

I wanted to do it for a movie shoot, and watched some tutorials on it. However, the tutorials all have paper money, where as I haven't seen paper in money in at least five-six years. So for modern times, is there a plastic material I could use, since notes are plastic nowadays?

In the US, I believe that bank notes (aka paper money) is made from a proprietary mix of linen & cotton.

Sorry, I should have specified. I live in Canada and I asked people what the notes were made of and they said 'plastic'. It's certainly not paper of any kind. Basically the material is a lot more shiny and reflective than paper, to the point where you can tell.

I did a little research and while I cant find specific regulations for Canada, there appears there is no canadian movie prop money. Thats likely because while in the USA you can make similar looking fake money for movies, its illegal to even try it in Canada. In fact there are Canadian movie prop money companies and they only sell fake US currency. SO do not try to make any canadian currency. Just buy movie prop US money from a place and use that.

Well I can't really buy the US stuff, cause it will take a long time to ship, and I want to get started sooner. I don't think they would bother prosecuting me or making a stink about it in Canada, as long as I just used it for the movie, and didn't do anything else with it. I mean it's not like they are going to go out of their way to see this short film, and then get a court order, to search my house to see if they find any evidence that I made this stuff. That would probably not be worth all the trouble to them.

The US prop money says "For Motion Picture Use Only" right on it so that you can tell it is not real money, though this past week someone used it here in the Cleveland, Ohio area and got away with it before someone noticed it was not real. They used it at a few places. It says it is not real in BIG LETTERS. Geesh.

You can get it from ebay and they will ship it right away. No waiting. Free expedited shipping at that.

Here is an example. This one will not ship to Canada. You may need to look through the listings to see if anyone does.

Okay thanks. I think what I will do is try to make my own if I cannot get it shipped in time, but I will make my own using a U.S. looking bill and not a Canadian one, if that's better.

Or what I could do to make things easier is just use real money and tell the actors and crew, that it's prop money, so they don't get the bright idea of stealing it :).

Never, and I cant emphasize this enough, NEVER copy a real bill. It is a crime. Thats why they have companies that print fake bills. The US has very explicit requirements on what must be different and will prosecute foreigners.

Okay thanks. I'll copy fake bills from online, and put them on polymer paper if it's available to buy, since I read that money is made out of polymer, at least here it is. So I will do that but with a fake bill picture. Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.

OMG, you made 1 short ever and now you are buying guns, making fake money, wanting to make it look real, without developing the skills to make it look believable in the first place.
Believe me: in your next project the realism of the look of your gun or money will NOT be the most important thing people will judge.
It will be at the bottom of the list. After story, sound, acting, light, camera, edit, styling, dialogue, VFX, makeup, etc.
Or do you think people will say: "That movie was you great: everything about it s#$ked, but that prop money: Oscar worthy!"?

It's the script that the cast and crew wanted to make so I thought I would jump on the opportunity, since my scripts were rejected before. Even though it's at the bottom of the list I still need the props to satisfy the cast and crew though.

Is there going to be an extreme close shot on the money, or will it just be passed between characters?

Basically a guy hands another guy an attache case of money, but the guy receiving it, is naturally going to want to flip through the bills wrapped in bands, cause he will want to maker sure that there is money on the inside and not just the outside. He will want to make sure it's most likely all there, so I would have to establish that.

Well I thought about getting the prop money, but I can't find any Canadian prop money, and all the money I can find online, has American President's on the notes, when my script is clearly set in Canada. Does anyone know where I can find Canadian prop money?

Okay thanks. I have tried looking up Canadian prop money on google including the link that was sent to me, but that Canadian money has weird oriental writing on it, and worried the audience will see it.
